Reintroductions Specialist Group - Oceania
The Reintroduction Specialist Group (RSG) is part of the Species Survival Commission (SSC), which is in turn part of The World Conservation Union (IUCN). The Oceania Section is chaired by Doug Armstrong from Massey University. This site contains extensive information on reintroductions in Oceania including New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific.
The aim of the RSG is to provide a network between reintroduction practioners worldwide, and provide guidance for re-introduction projects. The RSG has produced a set of Guidelines for Re-introductions, a Re-introduction Practitioners Directory, and publishes the annual newsletter “Reintroduction News”. These publications can all be downloaded for free from the main RSG website. In addition to the Oceania Section, there are RSG sections covering 6 other regions, and sections focusing on 5 different taxa.
The overall RSG is run by Frederic Launay (Chairman) and Pritpal Soorae (Secretary), who are based at the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. There are also several other specialist groups within the SSC doing work relevant to reintroduction, including the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group and the Invasive Species Specialist Group.
This site will hopefully be an up to date reference site for reintroductions that are occurring through out the Oceania region, if you have information that you would like to add the site, please feel free to contact us.
